Island Life Productions '66 Prize
2023 '66 Prize Shortlist
Abbie Keaveney - Porcelain
Like a glass silhouette, I sit on my dusty shelf, frozen, unable to speak. A tense feeling of panic echoing through-out my hollow cavern of a body. I couldn’t even shudder if I wanted to, it was horrific. Least I could see the dull surroundings of my bedroom. I could see the moon hovering in the corner of my window. Oh how it taunted me, oh how it shone, glistening against my fragile ceramics. If the moon could tan me, I’d be as red as the nose of my porcelain clown that sat up above my bed.
I had named him Steve. I thought it would be funny to give him a 9/5 job name, cause imagine the ringmaster introducing acts. Announcing fun and wacky names and then it gets to the clowns and the ringmasters like-
“And now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for…Steve the clown!”
So much for a laugh now. I was now ‘Jules the Medusa victim’ only I wasn’t turned to stone, I was but a measly glass statue. I was like a coffee cup, only you couldn’t drink from me.
I was just pretty decor- so much for feminism.

Are you a budding artist aged 16+ who has never been paid for their art? Are you passionate about your art and want your hard work to be showcased? Are you ready to become a professional artist? Introducing the Island Life Productions ’66 Prize, a competition looking to award one artist/collective/group alongside a shortlist and a longlist, all made up of emerging artists and artistic members of the public.
Island Life Productions was founded in 2011 by two siblings keen to have a platform to present their work, artistic expression and ability. In 2013, we made ‘The 1966 Guide to Basic Home Cooking’ and that film was selected as part of the Deep Fried Film Festival. This was an exciting and meaningful recognition for our small company at an early stage of our careers, an indication that a career in the arts was a realistic possibility. Today, as a company dedicated to working with emerging artists and members of the public to create high quality art, we are launching the ’66 prize to offer a boost to artists of all disciplines at the beginning of their artistic careers.
In order to be eligible for the prize, entrants must be over the age of 16 and must have never sold their work or had it exhibited, produced or performed professionally (in exchange for money) in the discipline they are applying for. Entrants can be based anywhere in the world.
The competition will take place at the Island Life Productions website where a longlist of the competing entries will be available in different formats based on the work presented (film, photograph of artwork, pdf of writing extract, audio clip of music, podcast episode link). The public will vote on a longlist to bring it down to a five-strong shortlist with the winner to be selected by the Island Life Productions team with the result to be announced online via live stream. The winner of the prize will win £66, a trophy and the opportunity to develop a project of their choice in collaboration with the Island Life Productions team and associated artists.
The prize will demonstrate and celebrate the high quality of work that early careers artists are capable of producing whilst giving them the opportunity to move to a higher level of their artistic progression. The prize will also ensure that we as a company remain relevant to the type of work that emerging artists want to make and members of the public want to see.

2022 '66 Prize Shortlist
Isabela Augustas - There Was Once a Little Girl
Ellie Harrison - Tagliatelle Tricolore
This is a drawing I made using pencil on paper. It is A0 size, 85x100cm. It shows nine dried tagliatelle pasta nests arranged in a 3x3 grid. I am interested in the forms of these nests. They seem otherworldly, and they contain lots of movement despite being fixed dried objects. I am interested in how they contain lots of potential, they will soften, unwind and unfurl when they are cooked. They look a bit how I imagine guts to be, it makes me laugh when I think about how we eat things that resemble our insides. They are frozen in this temporary state. I like the idea of chaos and control. I think this is why I used a grid, to further organise, regulate and contain these swirling, chaotic forms. I like the fact they are everyday objects that are often overlooked, and through my observation they are transformed into something more dramatic. But overall I find a lot of peace and tranquility in drawing things from real life, and find the process very addictive.
Tyler Powell - Prolonged Exposure

Lara Bostock - Forget You Not
My grandad passed away at the start of May 2020. Among other things he contracted COVID-19, and because of the situation in the UK I was not able to go down to England (from Scotland) for his funeral. This painting is my way of mourning and remembering him. This painting also represents how I will probably remember 2020.
2021 '66 Prize Shortlist
Keir Aitken - Prophet, Poet, Mystic, Darlin'
Ffion Denman - The Post Industrial North & South
I explore post-industrial Welsh towns and their working-class histories, representing communities that are hidden, fading or on the margins of society. Central to the work is the audience’s physical intervention with the historical and contemporary national socio-political narratives.
Wales has a synonymous historical past and present with industry with certain areas being the largest exporter of steel, iron, slate, copper and coal in Europe in their most prosperous days. What remains is a domineering post-industrial landscape echoing the past. In this body of work, looking at post-industrial towns of the North; Blaenau Ffestiniog and the South; Port Talbot, I aim to explore the communities in these towns, how the landscape has shaped their lives through employment, lifestyle and culture. Wales is a country that has long been overlooked, argued by Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price, as “the first and final colony”, with post-industrial Wales suffering economically of severe unemployment with West Wales being one of the poorest regions of Northern Europe. Through landscape photography, I aim to depict how the struggles of post-industrial life has damaged both the culture and identity of Wales but in turn how its people have attempted to overcome this.
